Norris Plays Down F1 Car Dominance and Championship Lead for McLaren
- After just one race, McLaren and Lando Norris positioned themselves as the top competitors to unseat.
- Oscar Piastri from McLaren admitted that in Melbourne "the difference compared to our competitors took us by surprise."
- After all, there are still 23 Grand Prix races left in the Formula 1 season.
Since May 2022, this is the first time that Formula 1 is heading into a Grand Prix with someone besides Max Verstappen topping the championship standings.
Lando Norris' win in Australia took place under varied weather conditions and included several thrilling instances, yet it confirmed that both he and McLaren carried forward their strong performance from 2024, securing first-place glory starting from an impressive pole position.
It is early, but the showing in Australia puts Norris seven points clear of Verstappen in the championship. The second round is in China this weekend, and the race weekend includes Formula 1’s first Sprint race of the year.
It doesn’t matter to me right now," Norris stated regarding the circumstance. "I’m not dwelling on it. Honestly, I couldn’t be less concerned about it. This shouldn’t alter my actions. This shouldn’t affect what the team does either. I enjoyed just one successful weekend. Everyone should try to relax a bit.

I remain concentrated and attempt to do the same over this weekend. However, I likely won't consider the championship until at least mid-year.
There are, after all, still 23 Grands Prix remaining in Formula 1’s season.
The pace of the McLaren MCL39s caught everyone's attention in Australia, as Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri comfortably locked out the front-row of the grid. The pair streaked clear of the field as a damp Melbourne circuit dried, with their hegemony over the race only interrupted by the late rain shower that caught out both drivers, most notably Piastri.
I believe we had an excellent race in Melbourne," Norris stated. "Halfway through the event, our lead over the competition was around 15 seconds or so.
“[But] It's another race. It's a different weekend. So, I wouldn't say we're confident that things are going to be exactly like they were. And I expect, again, a bit more competition from Ferrari this weekend. We saw how quick Red Bull have been. So, clearly they're not out of it. They're just as fast. I think when things are perfect, like they were in qualifying, we have an advantage. But they're certainly not far behind.”

Piastri admitted that in Melbourne "we were taken aback by the gap between ourselves and our competitors, and I don’t believe we reached our peak performance—some of our opponents failed to make full use of their capabilities," indicating that McLaren anticipates rival teams will step up this upcoming weekend.
Verstappen, second in Melbourne, acknowledged that “we are not the quickest at the moment, but we keep on trying to improve the car. Some weekends it will work out better than others.”
In Melbourne, Ferrari experienced a difficult weekend, struggling for speed during qualifying and then making mistakes during the rain-soaked race, which resulted in the team accumulating only five points.
“There are many things we can learn from this first weekend, many things haven’t gone the way we wanted them to go but it’s only the first race of the season, we’ll put the bits together for this weekend and we’ll do a step forward,” Charles Leclerc said.
“I still remain convinced the potential of the car is much better than what we’ve seen the first weekend but now we need to show that on track.”
