ABC Apologizes After Claudia Long Fabricates False Claims About Two High-Profile Politicians

The ABC has offered a humble apology following an erroneous accusation made by one of its reporters who falsely implicated two Nationals MPs for neglecting their constituencies during critical times when people are facing life-threatening situations. Claudia Long, the political correspondent for the national broadcaster, stated on "Insiders" last Sunday that National Party members of parliament were absent from their constituencies when the decision was made to dissolve the Coalition. "I believe another crucial aspect for regional areas is having a local representative present during times of crisis, such as floods where lives are lost—this situation occurred earlier this week," she explained to the show. Long particularly mentioned two individuals who perished in the flooding waters within Alison Penfold's potential electorate of Lyne on the Mid-North Coast. Additionally, he pointed out another fatality in Pat Conaghan’s constituency of Cowper, where...

The Perfectly Styled Skoda Octavia Combi: A Stunning International Edition

Fresh from a mid-cycle update, the newest iteration of the Skoda Octavia Combi remains true to its core values. This family-oriented car not only serves as a reliable partner but also acts as a capable teammate. The hardworking Czech automobile inspired us to embark on a journey and take it for a spin.

Doesn’t this describe exactly what a car should be: encouraging you to explore uncharted territories yet remaining practical for daily use? This concept embodies the relationship between Å koda and the European market, particularly highlighted in the Octavia’s Combi version. Despite the 2024 facelift enhancing the fourth-generation model, none of its core attributes have been diminished; instead, it now boasts an updated LED front end and a tech-enhanced cabin featuring seamless integration with both Apple and Android devices along with marginally bigger displays. While these advancements add convenience, they haven’t eliminated tactile controls—keeping operations intuitive and user-friendly aligns perfectly with ‘Simply Clever’ ethos cherished by the brand. Additional features like the retractable umbrella within the door panel, integrated scraper behind the fuel cap, roll-up cargo net activated at touch, hidden compartment beneath the trunk liner, and adjustable load dividers further underscore elements that remain constant in the Octavia lineup.

On all fours

Nonetheless, the update includes changes to the gasoline lineup. Beneath the hood lies a four-cylinder engine. During this evaluation, I drove the 1.5-liter variant featuring 150 horsepower, complemented by 48V mild hybrid tech and paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automated transmission. It’s worth noting that Å koda continues to provide customers with the option of a manual gearbox—available in both petrol versions (116hp and 150hp) as well as diesel configurations (115hp).
Returning to my experience driving on winding roads with the fully loaded car sporting 150 horsepower, operating the gearshift proved straightforward via a simple toggle control. However, occasionally, due to unfamiliarity, particularly during maneuvers, I mistakenly engaged Neutral (N) rather than Reverse (R) or Drive (D). This was likely just initial hesitation with the new setup; perhaps not too surprising considering it might be easy for anyone getting accustomed to such features.

Soft as cotton wool

Å koda does not typically hurry along unless it bears the RS badge for performance models. Consequently, this Octavia 1.5 TSI mild-hybrid remains quite composed. Its primary strength lies in providing finely tuned drive settings. When set to Sport, it becomes dynamic and eager; in Normal, it strikes an appropriate equilibrium; whereas in Comfort, akin to a cushioning cloud, it mitigates bumps beneath the tires—particularly noticeable when traversing a dusty gravel path where you might want to test its limits. Additionally, there’s a customizable setting allowing adjustments to the suspension, steering response, and throttle sensitivity according to personal preferences.
The estate version excels in terms of space as well. Backseat occupants have ample legroom without needing to compromise. Upfront, the ‘ergonomic’ seating features built-in massaging functions designed to indulge your backside during drives.

Generous

The standout feature of the Octavia Combi continues to be its trunk. Whether you're carrying luggage, bicycles, party supplies, tools, or even trash, all fit within the impressive capacity of 640 liters, which can extend up to 1700 liters once the back seats are lowered. Such ample space encourages adventurous trips. With a powerful engine delivering 150 horsepower, performance doesn’t wane over time. Nonetheless, actual fuel efficiency stays at approximately 6 liters per 100 kilometers, provided you avoid aggressive driving and unnecessary weight.

In mountainous terrain, the paddles offer an extra layer of excitement when using a manually operated DSG gearbox. The Octavia exhibits mild understeer and occasional flotation, yet it remains robust and eager. Moreover, it does not constantly criticize small mistakes thanks to its unobtrusive driver assistance technologies. Consequently, it makes for an ideal companion during peaceful journeys through hills and valleys.

Winning Formula

Just as you grasped, I wasn’t driving with a genuine disapproving scowl. Neither was I accompanied by an exuberantly joyful chuckle. The Czech equivalent of the Golf offers plenty of room, straightforwardness, and practicality. However, the Octavia lacks playfulness and originality. Its charm is somewhat offset by a cognac-colored interior that’s absolutely stunning. Behind the front passenger seat lies a tablet holder designed to keep the children (or perhaps your mother-in-law) happily engaged in their digital realm while they sit comfortably on the bench, watching the landscape flow past like scenes from another world inside this protective shell. To enhance the viewing experience further, the shades can darken the back section of the cabin when needed—provided you operate the panoramic sunroof shade. Additionally, there’s an extra feature available—an optional window—that opens up vistas reminiscent of ancient Octavian times for passengers within this Skoda.

Pricey

"When the invoice arrives, someone might feel inclined to comment, 'You’re stretching it a bit, Jana,'" referring to the high cost. Those inexpensive Å koda days are behind us now. The Octavia builds upon its reputation for excellence but comes with a higher price point. Indeed, considering factors like practicality, effectiveness, straightforwardness, and usability, it’s justifiable. This particular model equipped with a 1.5-liter Mild Hybrid Engine (MHEV) delivering 150 horsepower begins at €44,000 in Belgium. However, adding features such as luxurious interiors and exteriors—like those seen on our test vehicle—and extras including an 18-inch wheel package, trailer coupling, and numerous optional upgrades can push the total up to €58,740 before accounting for registration fees. Opting for the base version powered by gasoline with only 116 horsepower paired with a standard transmission drops the initial outlay down to around €33,500. Alternatively, diesel variants start from approximately €42,000 with similar output levels. Yet these alternatives represent quite another league altogether, offering fewer luxuries.

In France, Å koda provides an Octavia Combi boasting around 150 horsepower, quite close to the model we tested, priced at approximately €55,000. Meanwhile, in Switzerland, you would likely have to pay almost 60,000 Swiss francs. However, those who possess the financial capability to splurge might find themselves willing to overlook these extravagances. They could then relish, for a brief period, the romantic essence of gasoline-powered motoring.
