Usha Vance Heads to Greenland as Trump Seeks Purchase of the Arctic Territory
The Second Lady, Usha Vance, will head a delegation to Greenland this coming Thursday.
The trip appears to be part of the continued effort from President Donald Trump To buy the Arctic territory from Denmark.
In a brief video about the impending trip shared on social media, Mrs. Vance expressed her hope that the connection between the U.S. and Greenland will ‘continue to strengthen’ in the days ahead.
Those officials joining her on the trek include National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who are both expected to tour a military base in Greenland during their visit.
Meanwhile, Vance plans to bring her son to the Avannaata Qimussersu dog sledding event over the weekend in Greenland. They will head back to the United States on Saturday after their trip.
The second lady also disclosed that the U.S. is a sponsor of the race where 444 dogs and 37 mushers will compete.

The official trip without husband and Vice President J.D. Vance follows her solo trip to Italy earlier this month, when she led the U.S. delegation to the Special Olympics World Winter Games.
The Greenland visit also comes after the president's eldest son Donald Trump Jr. flew to the capital city of Nuuk to drum up support for his father's offer to buy the autonomous island territory from Denmark.
In her video about the journey, Vance mentioned that apart from participating in the race, she aims to ‘commemorate the extensive history of reciprocal respect and collaboration between our countries, and to convey the optimism that our partnership will become even more robust in the future.’
"I am eager to meet many of you shortly and to gain insights into your wonderful homeland, cultural practices, and time-honored customs," she said at the end.
The White House statement on the trip also highlights the relationship, stating: 'Ms. Vance and the delegation are excited to witness this monumental race and celebrate Greenlandic culture and unity.'
Earlier this year, during Don Jr.'s visit, the eldest son met with Greenlanders who support Trump.
Greenland is rich with natural resources and is a strategic location important for military and national security purposes in the arctic region.
With a land mass of 836,330 square miles and a population of only 55,775 as of March 9, 2025, Greenland is the least densely populated country in the world.
Denmark has expressed it has no interest in selling its very strategic and natural resource-rich land to the U.S.
And Trump has consistently stated that He wouldn’t resort to using force; instead, both the people of Greenland and their government would have to make this decision. If they wished to join the United States

"As I stated during my address to Congress, the United States firmly backs the people of Greenland’s right to shape their own destiny," Trump posted on social media earlier this month.
We remain committed to ENSURING YOUR SAFETY, just as we have done since World War II," he stated confidently. "We are prepared to SPEND BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to generate new employment opportunities and ENRICH YOU.
But Trump doubled-down on his offer for the island to be brought into the fold of the U.S.
'And, if you so choose, we welcome you to be a part of the Greatest Nation anywhere in the World, the United States of America!'
Trump has also expressed interest in taking control of the Panama Canal and making Canada the 51st U.S. state.
