Why a Small Gulf Town Is Thrilled with Trump's Tariffs

People living in a small coastal village recently rechristened Gulf of America are rejoicing over President Trump's contentious tariff proposal following their economy being devastated by inexpensive imports. Jeremy Zirlott, who works as a commercial shrimp fisherman in Bayou La Batre, Alabama He couldn’t scarcely believe it when he witnessed Trump announcing tariffs on imports from various countries worldwide last week. But while Global markets responded with shock. to the plan, Zirlott told the Wall Street Journal to him, it appeared almost unreal. Trump's tariff plan will impose heavy levies on nations that export the majority of America's shrimp, including a hefty 46 percent tariff on Vietnamese imports and 32 percent on Indonesia . These same imports had decimated the economy in Bayou La Batre in recent years, as the small fishing town couldn't compete with the influx of cheap farmed shrimp from overseas. Former NYSC Director Freed After 56 Days in Captivity

The abducted former Director General, National Youth Service Corps, Brig.-Gen. Maharazu Tsiga (retd.), has reportedly regained freedom after spending 56 days in his abductors’ den.

Tsiga's release was announced by a relative named Shamsuddeen Badaru through a Facebook post on Wednesday.

On February 5, 2025, Tsiga was kidnapped in his hometown of Tsiga, which is part of the Bakori Local Government Area within Katsina State, together with at least nine other individuals.

During the assault, the gang murdered an individual.

Even after his family paid the ransom, his captors kept him hostage for several weeks.

According to PUNCH Metro, there were contradictory reports about the ransom amount that was previously paid.

While some claimed the sum of N60m was paid, other reports claimed the actual money paid for his release is thrice higher than that.

Additionally, a report claimed his release; however, Brigadier General Ismaila Abdullahi (retired) informed reporters during an interview that the ex-NYSC Director-General was still being held by the abductors.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of Katsina State Command said, “I will get back as soon as it is confirmed.”

Efforts to speak with the family members also proved abortive as their phone contacts could not be reached as at the time of filing this report.

In his announcement of Brigadier General Maharazu I. Tsiga’s release on Wednesday, Badaru stated, "Alhamdulillah. Brigadier General Maharazu I. Tsiga is now free."

Kidnappings by alleged criminals have grown more frequent in Katsina recently.

According to a report by PUNCH Metro, an analogous incident occurred where four students were abducted from the Paris Quarters area, situated behind the Federal University in Dutsinma, Katsina State.
