Ikeja, Island, and Lekki Record Top Crime Rates in Lagos
New information has come to light indicating that Ikeja, Lagos The Island area and Lekki are among the top three locations within the state that have experienced the highest crime rates.
The Lagos Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro (SAN) revealed the figures during the ministerial press briefing in Alausa, Ikeja, to mark the second anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.
Citing statistics from the Lagos State Criminal Information System (LCIS), the Attorney-General said the data highlights growing concerns about public safety and criminal activity in key urban centres.
“Between January 2024 and May 2025, the top three crime locations in Lagos State were Ikeja, Lagos Island, and Lekki,” Pedro stated.
He also revealed that the LCIS documented a total of 74,962 cases/inmates statewide between 2018 and May 2025.
The Commissioner for Justice expressed concern over the strain on the state’s prisons, stating that they are functioning beyond their intended capacity by 106 percent.
He said as of May 2025, the combined inmate population stood at 9,096, a figure that far exceeds the infrastructure’s built capacity.
Pedro described the LCIS as a groundbreaking initiative aimed at automating criminal justice processes and improving efficiency.
"It acts as an online archive for all ongoing criminal cases in Magistrate and High Courts involving detainees or individuals out on bail. The system also encompasses biometric details, personal information, and records of offenses," he explained.
The report indicates that more than 10,000 suspects and cases were handled from January 2024 to May 2025. Interestingly, 64 percent of the convictions during this timeframe resulted from plea bargains.
The information further revealed that a considerable number of individuals processed within the system hailed from Ogun and Oyo states, outnumbering those from other regions.
During the reporting period, the Directorate of Citizen Rights, which focuses on matters related to social disorders, received 6,601 petitions. From this total, 4,443 cases were addressed, 1,882 stayed unresolved, and 285 were redirected to different governmental bodies.
Pedro likewise emphasized the financial assistance offered to those who filed complaints.
“A total of N7.3 million was recovered on behalf of petitioners, with N3 million awarded through court rulings,” he said.
In an effort to advance justice reforms, the ministry has established a Public Advisory Center aimed at providing free legal advice and information to residents of Lagos who are looking for recourse or trying to understand governmental procedures.
The Attorney-General reiterated the ministry’s commitment to leveraging technology and legal innovation to improve the state’s justice system and enhance public trust.
