ODATE, Akita — On May 18, two Akita dogs were appointed as special directors at Odate-Noshiro Airport in Akita Prefecture. They sported bandanas around their necks. Numerous passengers visiting the airport stopped to take photos with these canine officials.

These two dogs are siblings. One is named Rensui and the other is called Ruka. Interestingly, both of them have reddish fur. The owner of these dogs is Masato Chiba, who is 67 years old and hails from Odate.

The mayor of Odate, Kensuke Ishida, made the dogs into directors because June will be 10 years since Akita dogs first began welcoming visitors at the airport. The airport held a special ceremony on May 18. This day also celebrated the dogs' birthdays, coming soon on May 23. Both dogs will be four years old.

Chiba was presented with a distinctive document that appointed the dogs as directors. Numerous individuals witnessed this joyous occasion. Mayor Ishida commented, “My aim for these canine directors is to bring happiness to those visiting the airport. Hopefully, it will spark interest among visitors in this region.”
