Nigerian Content Awards: First Champions Crowned Today in Yenagoa

Lagos — The inaugural Nigerian Content Award Winners The event organized by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), in collaboration with Sweetcrude Limited, takes place today (Wednesday) in Yenagoa, which is the capital of Bayelsa State.

The event starting at 7 pm at the NCDMB Conference Hall will honor those who showed remarkable dedication to promoting Nigerian content within the oil and gas sector throughout 2024. This occasion will align with the Nigerian Oil and Gas Opportunity Fair (NOGOF), thereby highlighting outstanding achievements in the field even more.

The contenders for the distinguished Awards came forth through a rigorous selection procedure conducted by the Advisory Committee comprising industry leaders who manage the Awards. .

Viewed by sector professionals as an opportune recognition of exceptional domestic content, the Awards coincides with the Nigeria Content Development and Management Board’s (NCDMB) 15-year milestone. According to these experts, the introduction of the Champions of Nigerian Content Awards couldn’t be better timed.

The Awards ceremony is a testament to the remarkable strides made in advancing Nigerian content in the oil and gas industry over the past decade and a half.

From its inception, the NCDMB has spearheaded efforts for local content development, making certain that Nigerians and domestic businesses take on greater significance within Nigeria’s petroleum and natural gas sector. The Champions of Nigerian Content Awards isn’t merely an accolade recognizing personal and organizational accomplishments; rather, it acknowledges the shared advancements fostered through the Nigerian Content Act. This legislation has reshaped the field and bolstered participation from native entities.

Engineer Felix Ogbe, the Executive Secretary of NCDMB, highlighted that these accolades aspire to mirror the industry's version of the Oscars, honoring significant contributions instead of just involvement. "This distinction is intended solely for individuals who have surpassed basic requirements to foster measurable development in Nigerian content," he emphasized.

Last week, the NCDMB announced the shortlisted candidates for the awards across the 12 established categories which include: Nigerian Content Icon, Nigerian Content Lifetime Achievement Award, Nigerian Content International Upstream Operator of the Year, Nigerian Content Independent Upstream Operator of the Year, and Nigerian Content Midstream Operator of the Year.

Other listed categories are Nigerian Content Downstream, Operator of the Year, Nigerian Content International Service Company of the Year, Nigerian Content Indigenous Service Company of the Year, Nigerian Content Innovator of the Year, Nigerian Content Financial Services Provider of the Year, Nigerian Content Media Organisation of the Year, and Women in Leadership Award for Promoting Gender Equality and Empowerment.

The list of award nominees encompasses several key players across different categories within the oil industry. In the International Oil Company (Upstream) category, we have Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria, known as SPDC (Renaissance), along with Chevron, Exxon/SEPNU, Exxon-ESSO, and SNEPCo. For the Independent Oil Company (Upstream) Operator category, contenders include Aradel, First E&P & Antan, and Heritage & NEPL. The Downstream Operator segment features Dangote, WRPC, and PHRC/KRPC. Midstream Operators such as NLNG, ACCUGAS (which operates under Savannah Energy), and UTM FLNG are also recognized. Lastly, for the International Service Company category, nominations go to TechnipFMC & Saipem, Saipem Contracting, and Daewoo & Halliburton.

Other nominees and their categories are Dorman Long, Compass Survey and Lee Engineering & Marine Platform (Indigenous Service Company); and NEXIM and Bank of Industry in the Financial Service Company category).

According to the organisers, the criteria for assessment of media are publishing NCDMB press releases, embellishing NCDMB press releases, generating individual reports on NCDMB activities, wide reach and spread.

The organisers listed proposed benefits/recognition for winners of the Upstream/Midstream/Downstream Operators awards as specially designed Award plaques, display of Award winners in a specially designated section in Nigerian Content, NC, Tower tagged “Hall of Fame” for 2 years and name conference seminar/ breakout room after them for 2 years.

Winners from the International and Indigenous company categories, along with others, will be honored with custom-designed award plaques. Their names will also be showcased in a dedicated area within the NC Tower labeled as the "Hall of Fame" for two years, and they will receive free invitations to attend NCDMB’s main industry events for one year.

The Advisory Committee of Industry Titans overseeing the awards in order t o uphold the awards’ prestige is made up of distinguished experts, including Dr. Ernest Nwapa, pioneer Executive Secretary, NCDMB; Dr. Omar Farouk, Secretary General, African Petroleum Producers Organization; Mr. Tony Attah, Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director, Renaissance Africa Energy Company and Mr. Wole Akinyosoye, former Zonal Operations Controller, Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR.
